born in liverpool, great britain, into a military family; as the youngest of four boys, roach always had joining the military set in his sight. his father had been honourably discharged when roach was about 10, and each night he begged his father for stories about his and the other soldier's heroics. stories that he and his brothers went on to recreate in play pretend in the woods and on the beach surrounding where they lived, picturing themselves as great heroes where nothing ever went wrong.

hard work that all proved to be fruitful upon his enlistment into the sas, where his sweet nature pushed him into specialising in hostage rescue situations. eventually following up in covert surveillance as upon his enlistment, it was preferred he was kept out of the line of fire in fear that he wouldn't be able to handle the violence of the field up close and personal because he was too soft and sweet until he managed to save his team at the time all by himself and get them all safely to exfil.

NOW YOU SEE ME, NOW YOU DON'T. recruited from the sas shortly after the formation of the shadow company pmc in 2017 mostly for his skills in covert surveillance, a skill that would prove most useful to general shepherd with each mission roach was deployed on with shadow company. despite being one of the few non-americans within the pmc, roach found a family among its members. until forming a close bond with some of the members of task force 141 while working in las almas, roach's loyalties switch as he searches for an injured soap and ghost with the hope of convincing them he's given up shadow company.

calm in high-stress situations. a skill that would prove most useful with each mission the pmc was employed under general shepherd.in 2022, william was selected, alongside a group of shadows, to deliver missiles to american allies in the middle east under the order of general shepherd. what was supposed to be an easy mission, turned into something far more dangerous with the arrival of konni pmc and general shepherd's refusal to send reinforcements to the shadows on the field.outnumbered and without outside help, the shadows had no chance against the other pmc, leaving both general shepherd and graves to believe them killed in action. after facing extreme injuries in the attack and months wandering through enemy territory, william made it to a safe house where he was able to find an exfil back to the shadow's base and begin recovery before he could return to the field.

LISTEN ALL Y'ALL, ITS A SABOTAGE. employed under general shepherd to complete an under-the-table missile delivery to american allies, william is sent as the field medic for the op as a just in case percaution. when the company is intercepted by konni pmcs, william is suspected to be among the dead until he shows back up months later at a safe house and is brought back to shadow company's base to recover.

IN WAR, TRUTH IS THE FIRST CAUSALITY. after being left for dead by general shepherd in the middle of the black bag operation, william was ultimately rescued by the konni captain sent to steal the missiles from shadow company. nursed back to health, he's bitter that shepherd refused to help them while they were smuggling missiles under the table for him, that he was the only one still alive from the mission. angry and upset that more wasn't done, the konni see this as the perfect opportunity to get someone on the inside of shadow company and close to the americans. william returns to the shadow company base with a story of survival and a secret agenda to turn against his own team and country.

HEADCANON. .. william has third-degree burns scars on the right side of his body from being pinned under a burning vehicle during the black bag operation, where he was left for dead. they run from the tips of his right fingers and up his arm, where they reach his jawline and luckily stop, and much of his upper right side and chest bear the same burns as well. for this reason, it's rare for anyone to see him without his gloves, shirt, or balaclava, as there are few he trusts to see them without facing pity or judgment.

SO, WHO ARE YOU?. after being shot by kadivar in duga, nikolay was found by russell adler barely clinging to life after gunshots to the chest. he was then taken to be interrogated by adler and his team, however, every form of interrogation proved useless as nikolay refused to give up information on perseus. adler and park then decided the next course of action would be to use the drug mk ultra on nikolay, writing his memories and brain until he believed that he had fought alongside adler in vietnam, falsely gaining nikolay's trust through fake memories and feelings. once the brainwashing took hold, nikolay was then referred to as "bell", and used to locate perseus's location.

COLD WAR.

HE WHO CONQUERS ENDURES. the truth is finally revealed to "bell" after adler laid him on the cold lab table once more, putting dose after dose of mk ultra into his system to learn the location of perseus and his nukes in a last-ditch effort to save the world. after reliving scenario after scenario, "bell" finally remembers the bunker where he had met with perseus and the location where the nukes will be set free. resentful from learning the truth of his broken mind, and the reason for feeling so out of place among a team that was supposed to be friends, "bell" breaks free of adler's control and gives the team the wrong location, condemning the team and the world. once the truth that "bell" lied comes out, nikolay is given no choice but to kill adler in response.
